Classic bodybuilder Tim De Wever is what you can call a tremendously driven athlete. He just finished two competitions and we are curious about his ins and outs. He is 31 years young, 1.83 m and weighs 92-93 kg on season and +105 kg off season.


How many hours do you train per week?

That depends on which period; on or off season. Sometimes I have to train twice a day, but other times I’m only working out 5 days a week. I can round it up at about an average of 8 to 12 hours a week in the off season and 12 to 15 hours pre contest.


What does your diet look like when prepping for a competition?

My diet actually is basic. I get my carbohydrates from rice, potatoes (also sweet potatoes), oatmeal and rice cakes. Protein from chicken, fish (lean and fatty fish), steak and whey powder and my fats from olive oil, nuts and avocado. Vegetables are unlimited! My off season diet is pretty much the same as the pre contest diet, but only the quantities vary.


How do you prepare for a contest, physically and mentally?

I need goals, something to work towards to. I also try to visualize to shape I want to achieve. Because I really love working out, I’m doing it for myself in the first place and I’m not constantly looking at what my competition is doing. In every contest prep you’ll stumble apon mental struggles, but that’s normal and there is nothing wrong with it. I workout together with my wife and she exactly what to do and how to respond when this happens.


What is your secret to stay in shape?

Staying in shape comes from eating well in the first place. When being in off season, it doesn’t mean that you have to eat French fries all day every day. Follow your diet, work out as hard as you can (so you’ll burn extra calories) and have an occasional cheat meal. It also helps to do cardio 2 or 3 times a week, at a slow pace and lower heart rate.


Do you have any tips for starting athletes?

I recommend beginning athletes to find a good balance between sports, work or school and your personal life. A trophy won’t get you a diploma, will not bring bread on the table and won’t help you find a good life partner. Try things about, learn to self-reflect and make sure that you love what you do!

Furthermore, I have a huge sympathy for Marco Pantani, Frank Vandenbroucke and Lance Armstrong. They all caused a lot of commotion, but they had an enormous and inspiring commitment and way of training
